PUBLIC AWARENESS/SENSITIZATION ON COLORECTAL CANCER / IJOYA 6.0 FLAG OFF CAMPAIGN IN REMOLAND

Niola Cancer Care Foundation in collaboration with Global Colon cancer Association (GCCA) supported by Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital and the Remo Growth and Development Foundation (RemoGDF), successfully held the official flag-off of COLORECTAL CANCER PUBLIC AWARENESS/ SENSITIZATION PROJECT on Thursday, January 29, 2025, at the Akarigbo Palace Hall, Ita-Oba, Sagamu, Ogun State.  

The event featured a keynote lecture delivered by Dr. Olubunmi Fatungase, Chief Medical Director of Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, who emphasized the importance of early screening and detection of colorectal cancer a disease that begins in the colon or rectum and can be prevented through timely intervention.  

Dr. Fatungase educated participants on the risk factors, symptoms, and the role of colonoscopy in early detection, urging everyone to prioritize their health by undergoing regular screenings at reputable medical centers. She further called for increased awareness about colorectal cancer screening, highlighting its potential to save lives.  

In her address,Mrs. Eniola Akintunde, Founder and Executive Director of Niola Cancer Care Foundation,who spoke on her experience about colorectal cancer,also advocating for healthy living and lifestyle. she expressed profound gratitude to His Royal Majesty, Oba Babatunde Adewale Ajayi, the Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remoland, ably represented by Oba Samuel Kalejaiye, the Nloku of Iraye Remo, Dr. Elijah Ayowole Ogunsola for his unwavering support and commitment to the fight against colorectal cancer in Remoland.  

Also, in attendance were Dr. Elijah Ayowole Ogunsola, the Executive Secretary, Ogun State Primary Healthcare Development Board (OGPHECADEB), ably represented by Dr. Salimat Sanni, Otunba Seni Adetu, Chairman, Governing Council, RemoGDF, ably represented by Omoba Abiola Ogundeko, Media and Publicity Adviser, RemoGDF,Prince Kunle Soile; Ag. General Manager, RemoGDF, Mrs. Temitope Esther Solomon, President CSFAN, Ogun State, Otunba Niyi Sodiya, and other members of Consolidated Sagamu Farmers Association of Nigeria.

This program marks a significant step in our ongoing mission to educate, advocate, and promote early detection of colorectal cancer across communities. Niola Cancer Care Foundation remains dedicated to raising awareness and ensuring that individuals have access to life-saving information and resources.

The Blue Hat Bow Tie Weekend Campaign

The Blue Hat Bow Tie Weekend Campaign, organized by Global Colon Cancer Association and implemented by Niola Cancer Care Foundation was held at the Fountain of Life Church in Lagos, Nigeria and Redeem Christain church of God, Temple of praise parish, Lagos to commemorate Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. This report outlines the objectives, activities, outcomes, and recommendations of the campaign.


OBJECTIVES
• To raise awareness on colorectal cancer to the congregation and the public and its importance in early detection and prevention.
• To engage the congregation of Fountain of Life Church/ Redeem Christian church and the public at large in supporting individuals affected by colorectal cancer
• To promote the Blue Hat Bow Tie symbol as a visual representation of solidarity and support for colorectal cancer awareness.


ACTIVITIES


1. Pre-Campaign Planning:
Coordination with Fountain of Life Church leadership/ Redeem Christian church to secure approval and support for the campaign.
Printing of promotional materials, including flyers, posters, and publicity on our social media pages. Ensuring volunteers assist with campaign logistics and activities.

2. Implementation
Onsite setup of campaign booth at Fountain of Life Church premises.
Distribution of 147 blue hats and 40 bow ties to the interested members.
Educational presentations and interactive sessions on colorectal cancer awareness, prevention, and early detection this was anchored by Eniola Akintunde and Temitope Salako and an attendance of 270 people was recorded.

Engaging church members in discussions and Q&A sessions about colorectal cancer.
Encouraging church members to wear blue hats and bow ties throughout the weekend in solidarity with colorectal cancer patients and survivors

OUTCOME

1. Increased Awareness: The campaign successfully raised awareness about colorectal cancer among Fountain of Life Church/ Redeem Christain church members, with over 200 people expressing interests in learning more about the disease and its risk factors.

2. Community Engagement: The campaign fostered meaningful engagement and dialogue within the church community, encouraging open conversations about cancer prevention and support.


3. Symbolic Gesture: The sight of church members wearing blue hats and bow ties, blue dresses served as a powerful visual symbol of support and solidarity for colorectal cancer awareness.
